The award-giving ceremony of the third edition of AWDA, Aiap Women in Design Award, took place in Rome on 30 September 2017 in the framework of Aiap Design Per, International Graphic Design Week “Visible Cultures”, in the Sala Dante of Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, attended by many of the selected women communication designers. This year 186 designs from 34 countries have been submitted for participation in the AWDA award.
In the first selection, 62 projects were shortlisted as worthy of publication in the volume dedicated to the third edition of AWDA (22 designs in the ‘Professionals’ category, 7 designs in the ‘Researchers and teachers’ category, and 33 designs in the ‘Students’ category).
The second selection awarded three honorary mentions, one special mention, and one AWDA 2017 first prize.

First Prize
Afrouz Razavi
Journal des Jungles
The project “Journal des Jungles” appears very powerful in its graphics and composition styles, and is even more so for adopting a design method that is able to give voice and a sense of inclusion to a fragile, nameless part of the world population – migrants and refugees – in a dialogue that involves research centres, educational institutes, political institutions and end users.
The project focuses on one of the greatest tragedies of our time – the phenomenon of migration, which involves a huge number of fleeing people and highlights the failures of the world economic and environmental system as a whole. The role of an association like Aiap is precisely to bring back the issues of communication to the “usefulness” of design, with actions that, far from revolving around form alone, may have a major impact on the world’s cultures.

50 Meters of Omaya’s Stories
For being able to tell the stories of a small middle eastern community, which had up to then been passed on through its own oral tradition, by means of a highly poetic, elegant and evocative visual language. The tale wishes to bring to light the community’s cultural, anthropological, historical and social values, constructing a narration that develops along one 50-metre long uninterrupted line on paper – a solution that gives a ‘material’ shape to the otherwise invisible interlacing of lives and memories.
Honorary Mention
Professionals Category
Susanna Cerri
DIDA
For being able to coordinate, within one single system, the editorial identity of the Department of Architecture at the University of Florence. The project, implemented with the collaboration of junior graphic designers, becomes a major reference point in the world of editorial design for public institutions, thanks to its ability to design different levels and, most importantly, different registers of communication within a single system.
Honorary Mention

Clarissa Sabeto
Il pubblico utile
For providing a contemporary interpretation key to “public utility graphics”, a significant phase in the history of Italian graphic design. The work has not only succeeded in re-reading that historical moment, but also in identifying the possibility for it to be implemented in contemporary scenarios by hypothesising new areas of intervention.
Special mention
Chris Rocchegiani
Libri Manifesti
The jury has awarded a Special Mention to the project “Libri Manifesti” for its pedagogical value in promoting reading through the direct involvement of children, teachers and parents. The project rests on the idea of a field within which to circumscribe one’s narration following a guided path and using pre-set, though non-standardising, tools which enable children to use the icons of their own imaginative world and give shape to their thoughts and their stories. From private to public, from the school to the street, the stories created by the children thus become the narrative landscape of the whole city community.
